The FI-20V is a handheld live fibre identifier that clamps onto a fibre or patch cord without cutting or disconnecting it, and shows whether light is present, which way the signal is travelling and the optical power reading from -40dBm to 10dBm across 800nm to 1700nm. It recognises 270Hz, 1kHz and 2kHz test tones with a buzzer, and has a built-in 10mW, 650nm visual fault locator (VFL) on a 2.5mm universal port for tracing breaks up to 5km.
Features and Benefits
- One clamp for 0.25, 0.9, 2.0 and 3.0mm fibre - bare fibre, buffered fibre and jumpers with no chuck changes.
- Left and right signal LEDs - see the traffic direction before you touch a working circuit.
- 270Hz, 1kHz and 2kHz tone recognition with buzzer - pick out the fibre carrying your test tone in a busy tray.
- Built-in 10mW VFL - red light to find breaks and bad connectors up to 5km, through a 2.5mm ST, FC and SC universal port.
- LED torch and backlit display - work in cabinets and manholes without extra lighting.
- Trigger clamp - press the switch on the back to clamp the fibre and start the test automatically.
- Two φ1mm InGaAs detectors - works on single-mode and multimode fibre.
Applications
- Finding the right live fibre before cutting or re-routing in FTTH and backbone work.
- Checking signal direction at splice closures and ODFs.
- Fault finding on patch leads and short runs with the VFL.
- Telecoms maintenance in exchanges and data centres.
Note: The VFL emits a visible red laser. Never look into the laser output or a live fibre end. The unit runs on 2 x AA dry batteries, which are not included.

A: It clamps onto a fibre on the line and detects the light passing through it, so you can see if the fibre is live, which direction the signal is going and whether a test tone is present, without cutting or disconnecting it.. Q: What fibre sizes does the FI-20V take? A: The universal holder takes 0.25mm bare fibre and 0.9mm, 2.0mm and 3.0mm cable, with no need to change chucks.. Q: Which test tones can it identify? A: 270Hz, 1kHz and 2kHz, plus CW light. A buzzer sounds when a frequency is identified.. Q: How far does the VFL reach? A: The built-in 10mW, 650nm VFL is listed for a detection distance of up to 5km.. Q: What batteries does it use? A: Two AA dry batteries. They are not included in the package..
