This rechargeable visual fault locator injects a 650nm red laser into a fibre so breaks, sharp bends and bad connectors glow red, with a choice of 1, 10, 20, 30 or 50mW output for test distances from 3 to 5km up to 35 to 40km.
The pen-sized body (13.5 x 3.7 x 2.5 cm, 50g) has a universal 2.5mm port that takes SC, FC and ST connectors directly, and LC (1.25mm) through the FC to LC adapter offered as an option. A spring cover pops open at the press of a button to protect the port. The VFL button switches between continuous (CW) and 2Hz flashing output, and a separate LED button turns on a white torch for checking patch panels in dark cabinets. A built-in 3.7V lithium battery charges over USB, with a red light that flashes while charging and stays on when full.
Features and Benefits
- Five power levels from 1mW to 50mW: pick the reach you need, from 3 to 5km on the 1mW unit to 35 to 40km on the 50mW unit.
- 650nm red laser, CW or 2Hz: the flashing mode makes a fault easier to spot along a cable run.
- Universal 2.5mm port for SC, FC and ST: no adapters needed for the common connectors.
- LC option: FC male to LC female adapter for 1.25mm connectors.
- Built-in LED torch: light up the work area without a second tool.
- Rechargeable over USB: about 4 to 15 hours per charge depending on power level.
- Self-replaceable adapter head and ceramic core, with one spare ceramic core supplied.
Applications
- Finding breaks and tight bends in patch cords and pigtails.
- Checking continuity and tracing fibres in FTTH drops and patch panels.
- Locating faults near splice trays and connectors at the near end of a link.
- Fibre identification during installation and repair work.
In the box
- Visual fault locator, spare ceramic core, instructions, certificate of conformity, lanyard, USB charging cable and colour box.
- FC to LC adapter with the "with FC-LC" options.
Note: This tool emits a laser. Never look into the laser output or a live fibre end, and keep the cover closed when not testing.

A: It depends on the power: 3 to 5km at 1mW, 8 to 10km at 10mW, 15 to 20km at 20mW, 25 to 30km at 30mW and 35 to 40km at 50mW.. Q: Can the VFL test LC connectors? A: The 2.5mm port takes SC, FC and ST directly. For 1.25mm LC connectors you need the FC male to LC female adapter, which comes with the "with FC-LC" options.. Q: How long does the battery last? A: Rated working time per charge is 15h at 1mW, 10h at 10mW, 8h at 20mW, 6h at 30mW and 4h at 50mW.. Q: What wavelength is the laser? A: It uses a 650nm red LD laser, switchable between continuous output and 2Hz flashing.. Q: How does a visual fault locator find a break in fibre? A: The red light travels down the fibre and leaks out wherever the glass is broken or bent too tightly, so the fault shows as a red glow through the jacket or at the connector..
