This OTDR tester is a pocket optical time domain reflectometer with a 3.5 inch multi-touch screen that locates breaks, bends, splices and connectors on single-mode fibre over ranges from 100m to 80km, with a 2m event dead zone. It is offered at 1310/1550nm (22/20dB), 1550nm, 1610nm or 1625nm (20dB), and also works as an optical power meter, light source and 10mW visual fault locator.
One-touch auto testing picks the range and pulse width for you, while average and real-time modes let you set them by hand. The event map turns the trace into a line of icons for launch, connectors, splices, bends, splitters and the fibre end, with the distance and loss of each. The 1550nm, 1610nm and 1625nm versions can test with live traffic on the fibre.

Note: The OTDR, light source and VFL ports emit laser light. Never look into the laser output or a live fibre end. Only the 1550nm, 1610nm and 1625nm versions are for live fibre testing; the 1310/1550nm version must be used on dark fibre.

A: An optical time domain reflectometer sends light pulses down a fibre and measures what comes back, so it can show the fibre length and the position and loss of breaks, bends, splices and connectors. This one shows the result as a trace and as an event map.. Q: How do I read an OTDR trace on this tester? A: Each event is numbered on the trace and listed in a table with distance, loss, average loss and reflectance. Tap the map icon to see the same events as icons for connectors, splices, bends, splitters and the fibre end.. Q: Can it test a live fibre? A: The 1550nm GR-230T works with 1310/1490/1577nm traffic present, and the 1610nm and 1625nm versions with 1310/1490/1550/1577nm. The dual 1310/1550nm GR-230M is for dark fibre only.. Q: How far can this OTDR test? A: Ranges run from 100m to 80km, with a 3m minimum test distance. The seller quotes stable results from 3m to 60km.. Q: How long does the battery last? A: The built-in 2000mAh Li-ion battery lasts 4 to 5 hours and charges over USB-C..
