This OTDR is the NF-9816, a dual-wavelength 1310/1550nm optical time domain reflectometer with 28/26dB dynamic range, a test range of 5m to 80km and a 3m event dead zone, built into a handheld tester with a 4.3 inch multi-touch screen. It also carries a 10G PON power meter for 1490nm and 1577nm, a standard power meter, a light source, a 10mW VFL and RJ45 cable tools.
Automatic OTDR needs only the wavelength and test time, while Expert OTDR lets you set wavelength, range, pulse width and thresholds by hand. The event map turns the trace into a simple link diagram with the distance, loss and reflection of each event, and end state check confirms whether the ONT line at the customer end is connected. Results save as standard .sor files, with at least 600 kept internally plus a TF card.
Features and Benefits
- 28/26dB at 1310/1550nm, 5m to 80km - from short drops to long feeders.
- 10G split-wave OPM at 1490nm and 1577nm - read both downstream wavelengths for 10GEPON and XGPON on one screen.
- Power meter from -50 to +26dBm, 800 to 1700nm - general power and loss checks.
- 10mW 650nm VFL with steady, 1Hz and 2Hz modes - find breaks in patch leads and splice trays.
- RJ45 length, sequence and tracking with receiver - copper checks without a second tool, live-line safe to 60V.
- Touch screen and buttons, gesture zoom and screen capture.
- Large lithium battery with Type-C charging - over 12 hours of measuring, over 20 hours standby.
Applications
- FTTH and 10G PON installation, acceptance and fault finding
- Locating breaks, bends and bad splices on drop and backbone cable
- ONT end state checks from the corridor fibre box
- Network cable tracing and testing in comms rooms
In the box
- Tester, wire tracker receiver, cotton swabs, Type-C cable, charging head, adaptor, 8GB memory card and card reader, RJ45 cable, certificate, note card, manual, tool pouch and box.
Note: Never look into the laser output or a live fibre end. End-face inspection needs a separate inspection handle, which is not in the box. The charging head pictured has a US-style two-pin plug, so use a UK adapter.

Q: What does OTDR stand for? A: Optical time domain reflectometer. The NF-9816 fires light pulses into the fibre and measures the return to show length, loss and the position of every connector, splice and break up to 80km.. Q: How do I read an OTDR trace on the NF-9816? A: Switch to the event map: it draws the link from start to end with an icon for each event and lists its distance, loss, reflection and cumulative loss. The trace and event table are still there in Expert OTDR.. Q: What is the 10G split-wave power meter for? A: It measures the 1490nm and 1577nm downstream signals separately on one screen, which is what you need on 10GEPON and XGPON networks. It reads from +10 to -40dBm.. Q: Can it test network cables as well as fibre? A: Yes. It measures RJ45 cable length, checks wire sequence for pass, cross and short-circuit faults, and tracks cables with the supplied receiver, including live lines up to 60V.. Q: How long does the battery last? A: The seller quotes more than 12 hours of measuring and more than 20 hours of standby, with Type-C charging..
