The first step in choosing a sensor is matching the thermocouple type to your equipment and temperature requirements. Different types (e.g., K, J, E) have unique temperature ranges, accuracies, and environmental resistances. The type you need is determined by your process temperature and the input your controller or meter is designed to read.
K-Type is the most widely used thermocouple in industry due to its broad temperature range and affordability. Our K-Type probes cover temperatures from -50°C up to 1300°C, making them suitable for applications from general machinery monitoring to high-heat processes like furnace control and exhaust gas measurement. We also offer J-Type and PT100 options for specific equipment that requires them. Always verify compatibility with your existing instrumentation before purchasing.
The physical form of the thermocouple probe is for accurate measurement and durability. Probes are available in various styles, including simple sheathed probes, screw-in probes with M6, M8, or NPT threads for secure mounting, and designs with compression springs to ensure constant contact with a surface.
Probe length and diameter are key specifications. The length, ranging from 50mm to 500mm in our catalog, must be sufficient to place the sensing tip at the exact measurement point. The probe diameter, from 1mm to 8mm, involves a trade-off: smaller diameters offer faster response times, while larger diameters provide greater mechanical strength and longer life in demanding conditions. For harsh environments, consider an armored or sheathed probe for extra protection.
Always verify that the sensor's temperature range and materials are appropriate for your specific application. Using a probe beyond its rated temperature, such as a 400°C sensor in a 1000°C furnace, will result in immediate failure and inaccurate data. Our selection covers low-temperature needs up to high-temperature processes like ceramic kilns and exhaust gas temperature (EGT) monitoring, with probes rated to 1300°C.
The probe's sheath material must also be compatible with the environment. Most of our probes use a stainless steel sheath, which is suitable for general use and for measuring EGT. For extreme heat in furnaces and kilns, select a probe with a ceramic sheath and appropriate elements like platinum-rhodium, which are designed to withstand temperatures where standard metal sheaths would degrade.
