Choosing Proximity Sensors

How do I choose between an inductive and a capacitive proximity sensor?
Choose an inductive sensor if you only need to detect metal targets. Select a capacitive sensor if you need to detect non-metallic objects, liquids, or targets hidden behind glass or plastic barriers. Inductive models offer excellent resistance to environmental contaminants like oil and dust when detecting metal.
Should I select an NPN or a PNP proximity sensor for my PLC?
Your choice depends on whether your PLC input card requires a sinking or sourcing signal. PNP sensors are standard in European machinery and source positive voltage to the input. NPN sensors are more common in Asian machinery and sink the input signal to ground. Always check your controller's schematic before ordering.
