Choosing the right cutter material depends on your workpiece hardness and machine rigidity. High-speed steel (HSS) offers excellent toughness and works well for general milling of aluminum and softer metals on less rigid setups. For high-speed production and hardened steels, solid carbide is essential to maintain a clean cutting edge.
Pay close attention to the Rockwell hardness (HRC) rating of your tooling. Standard alloy carbide steel tools rated at HRC50 work well for tool steels and alloy steels. For demanding materials like stainless steel, upgrade to high-performance cutters rated at HRC65 to prevent premature thermal breakdown.
The number of flutes on a cutter determines chip clearance capacity and the quality of the surface finish. Single-flute and two-flute tools provide large chip pockets. These pockets are critical when cutting gummy materials like aluminum, acrylics, and soft plastics that melt easily.
