Watts equal volts times amps, so amps equal watts divided by volts. A 2,000 watt load draws 8.3 amps at 240 volts and 16.7 amps at 120 volts. That is for a resistive load; for a motor divide by power factor as well, and for three phase divide by 1.732 times the line voltage.

The wattage formulas

DC and single-phase resistive: P = V x I, so I = P / V and V = P / I.

Single-phase AC with a reactive load: P = V x I x PF, so I = P / (V x PF).

Three-phase AC: P = 1.732 x V x I x PF, so I = P / (1.732 x V x PF), with V line to line.

Combined with Ohm's law these give the other forms people search for: P = I² x R and P = V² / R. They are all the same relationship rearranged.

How many amps is 2000 watts?
8.3 amps at 240 volts, 8.7 amps at 230 volts, or 16.7 amps at 120 volts, for a resistive load. Divide watts by volts. A motor drawing 2,000 watts at 0.85 power factor pulls about 9.8 amps at 240 volts.
How many amps is 400 watts?
1.7 amps at 240 volts or 3.3 amps at 120 volts for a resistive load.
What is the formula for watts?
Watts equal volts times amps for DC and resistive AC loads. Multiply by power factor for reactive AC loads, and by 1.732 as well for three phase. Rearranged with Ohm's law it also gives P = I²R and P = V²/R.
What is power factor and when do I need it?
The ratio of real power to apparent power. Heaters and lighting are 1.0 and you can ignore it. Motors, transformers and electronic supplies are typically 0.8 to 0.9, and ignoring it under-sizes the cable and breaker by 10 to 20 percent.
