Single phase kVA is volts times amps divided by 1,000. Three phase adds the square root of three: kVA equals 1.732 times volts times amps divided by 1,000. So 100 amps at 400 volts three phase is 69.3 kVA. To go from kW to amps you also need power factor, since kW is real power and kVA is apparent power.

The formulas

Single phase: kVA = V x A / 1,000, and A = kVA x 1,000 / V.

Three phase: kVA = 1.732 x V x A / 1,000, and A = kVA x 1,000 / (1.732 x V), where V is line-to-line voltage.

kW to amps needs power factor: A = kW x 1,000 / (V x PF) single phase, or A = kW x 1,000 / (1.732 x V x PF) three phase. Motors and transformers run at 0.8 to 0.9 power factor; heaters and incandescent lighting at 1.0.

The 1.732 is the square root of three, and it appears because three-phase power is delivered across three conductors whose voltages are 120 degrees apart.

How do I convert amps to kVA?
Multiply volts by amps and divide by 1,000 for single phase. For three phase, multiply by 1.732 as well: kVA = 1.732 x V x A / 1,000. 100 amps at 400 volts three phase is 69.3 kVA.
What is the difference between kVA and kW?
kVA is apparent power, volts times amps. kW is real power, the part actually doing work. The ratio between them is power factor. A 100 kVA transformer at 0.8 power factor delivers 80 kW.
Why is there a 1.732 in the three phase formula?
It is the square root of three. Three-phase power arrives on three conductors 120 degrees apart, and the maths of combining them puts root three into every line-to-line calculation.
Which voltage do I use for three phase?
Line to line, which is the voltage between any two of the three phases. That is 400 volts on a European industrial supply, 480 volts on a US one, and 208 volts on a US commercial supply.
