Socket Size Conversion Chart

No SAE socket is an exact metric match except 19mm to 3/4 inch and 27mm to 1 1/16 inch, which are close enough to use. Everything else is a compromise. The safe rule is that a difference under 0.004 inch will fit, 0.004 to 0.008 inch fits loosely on low torque only, and anything wider will round the corners off the fastener.

Metric to standard socket size chart

The gap column is what matters. Under 0.004 inch the socket seats properly. Between 0.004 and 0.008 inch it will go on but only use it at low torque and only on a fastener in good condition. Over that, find the right socket.

The two conversions worth remembering are 19mm to 3/4 inch, which is 0.002 inch apart, and 27mm to 1 1/16 inch at 0.0005 inch. 17mm to 11/16 inch is the one people reach for and it is 0.018 inch loose, which is how corners get rounded.

Standard wrench sizes

A standard SAE spanner set runs 1/4 through 1 inch in sixteenths, with the half sizes filled in from 3/8 upward. A metric set runs 6mm to 24mm. Between them they cover almost everything on a machine, but you cannot substitute freely, as the table above shows.

Wrench size is the distance across the flats of the fastener, not the thread size. A 1/2 inch bolt takes a 3/4 inch spanner. An M8 bolt takes a 13mm.

One inch is 25.4mm exactly, so millimetres to inches is a division by 25.4. The conversions below are the ones that come up on a bench often enough to be worth knowing without a calculator.

Socket Size Conversion Chart questions

What is 17mm in standard?
The nearest SAE size is 11/16 inch at 0.6875, against 0.6693 for 17mm. That is 0.018 inch of slop, which is enough to round a fastener under load. Use a real 17mm socket. If you have no choice, 11/16 will turn a loose nut but not a tight one.
Is 19mm the same as 3/4 inch?
Close enough to use. 19mm is 0.7480 inch and 3/4 is 0.7500, a gap of 0.002 inch. This is the one metric to SAE substitution that works reliably in both directions.
What is the difference between SAE and metric sockets?
SAE sockets are sized in fractions of an inch and are used on fasteners with inch threads. Metric sockets are sized in millimetres. The size given is the distance across the flats of the fastener head in both cases, so the only difference is the unit.
Why do metric sockets sometimes fit SAE bolts?
Because a few sizes land within a couple of thousandths of an inch of each other by coincidence. 19mm and 3/4, 27mm and 1 1/16, and 8mm and 5/16 are the reliable ones. Every other pairing is a compromise, and the poor ones are what damage fastener heads.
