Tap Drill Size Chart

For metric coarse threads the tap drill is the nominal diameter minus the pitch: an M8 x 1.25 tap needs a 6.8mm drill. For unified threads use the chart, since number and letter drills do not follow a simple rule. A 1/4-20 tap needs a number 7 drill at 0.201 inch.

Metric tap drill size chart

Metric coarse tap drills follow one rule: drill diameter equals nominal diameter minus pitch. That gives roughly 75 percent thread engagement, which is the right target for almost all work. Going deeper than 75 percent adds very little strength and makes the tap far more likely to snap.

The clearance column is the hole for the bolt to pass through, not the hole to be tapped.

Drill size for 1/4-20 and other unified taps

Unified tap drills land on number, letter and fractional drills rather than a round figure, so the chart is the only reliable route. A 1/4-20 tap takes a number 7 drill at 0.201 inch. The 13/64 fractional at 0.2031 is close and often substituted, which cuts engagement to about 70 percent.

NPT pipe tap drill sizes

Pipe taps are tapered, so the drill is sized for the small end of the taper and the tap cuts progressively as it goes in. Depth of entry sets the thread, not the drill.

Drill bit conversion chart

Number drills run from 1 (0.228 inch) down to 80 (0.0135 inch), getting smaller as the number rises. Letter drills run A (0.234 inch) to Z (0.413 inch), getting larger. Both overlap the fractional sizes, which is why a full index has all three.

Tap Drill Size Chart questions

What drill size do I need for a 1/4-20 tap?
A number 7 drill at 0.201 inch, which gives about 75 percent thread engagement. The 13/64 fractional at 0.2031 inch is the common substitute and drops engagement to roughly 70 percent, which is still fine for most work.
What is the tap drill for a 6mm tap?
A 5.0mm drill. M6 coarse has a 1.0mm pitch, and the metric rule is nominal diameter minus pitch.
Why not tap for 100 percent thread engagement?
Because it buys almost nothing. Going from 75 to 100 percent engagement adds around 5 percent to thread strength but more than doubles the torque needed to drive the tap. The tap breaks long before the thread would have stripped.
What is the difference between a tap drill and a clearance drill?
The tap drill makes the hole you cut the thread into, so it is smaller than the bolt. The clearance drill makes the hole the bolt passes through on the other part, so it is slightly larger than the bolt.
Does the tap drill change for fine threads?
Yes, and it gets larger. A fine thread has a smaller pitch, so nominal minus pitch gives a bigger drill. M8 x 1.0 fine needs a 7.0mm drill against 6.8mm for the 1.25 coarse.
