Bolt Torque Chart

Torque comes from grade, diameter and whether the threads are dry or lubricated. A dry 1/2-13 grade 5 bolt takes about 75 ft-lb; the same bolt in grade 8 takes 110 ft-lb. Lubricated threads need roughly 25 percent less torque for the same clamp load, so using a dry figure on an oiled bolt will overstretch it.

These are dry, plain-finish values in foot-pounds, calculated at 75 percent of proof load with a nut factor of 0.20. Multiply by 0.75 for oiled or waxed threads, and by about 0.85 for zinc plated.

Grade is marked on the head. Grade 2 has no marks, grade 5 has three radial lines, grade 8 has six.

Bolt torque calculator

The working formula is T = K x D x P, where T is torque, K is the nut factor, D is nominal diameter and P is the target clamp load. Use K = 0.20 dry, 0.15 lubricated and 0.17 for zinc plated.

Torque sequence and pattern

On any joint with a gasket or a machined face, tighten in a criss-cross star pattern in at least three passes: 30 percent of final torque, then 60, then 100. Going straight to full torque on the first pass pulls the joint out of flat and the first bolts you tightened end up loose.

On a circular flange, work across the diameter each time rather than round the circle. On a rectangular cover, start in the middle and spiral outward.

Torque specs for U bolts

U bolts have two threaded legs sharing one load, so tighten them alternately in small increments rather than one leg at a time. Uneven tightening bends the bolt and the joint never seats.

Where the manufacturer gives a figure, use it. U bolts on leaf spring and axle work are usually specified as a stretch or a re-torque interval rather than a single number, because they relax after the first load cycles. Re-torque after the first run.

Bolt Torque Chart questions

What torque does a 1/2 inch bolt take?
A dry 1/2-13 grade 5 bolt takes about 75 ft-lb and the same size in grade 8 takes 110 ft-lb. Grade 2 is 49 ft-lb. Reduce all three by about a quarter if the threads are oiled.
How much torque does lubrication change?
A lot. Oil drops the nut factor from roughly 0.20 to 0.15, so the same torque produces about a third more clamp load. Applying a dry-spec torque to an oiled bolt is the usual cause of snapped fasteners and stripped threads.
How do I identify bolt grade?
Look at the head. SAE grade 2 is unmarked, grade 5 carries three radial lines and grade 8 carries six. Metric bolts use a stamped number instead, such as 8.8, 10.9 or 12.9.
Why does grade 2 torque drop above 3/4 inch?
SAE J429 lowers the proof strength of grade 2 fasteners above 3/4 inch, so a 7/8 grade 2 bolt is rated lower than the 3/4 below it. It is not an error in the table. Grade 2 is rarely the right choice at those sizes anyway.
Should I torque to the bolt or to the nut?
Turn the nut where you can. Published figures assume the nut is the part rotating, and turning the head instead adds friction under the head that changes the reading. If you must turn the head, expect a slightly higher torque for the same clamp load.
