Oil Seal Size Chart

Rotary shaft seals are quoted as three numbers in order: shaft diameter, housing bore, then width. A 35 x 52 x 7 seal fits a 35mm shaft in a 52mm bore and is 7mm wide. Measure the shaft and the bore, not the old seal, because a used seal has taken a set.

Common oil seal sizes

Seal sizes follow the shaft, and for a given shaft there are usually only two or three standard bore and width combinations. If the shaft is a standard metric size, the seal almost certainly exists off the shelf.

Seal type codes

The type code describes the lip arrangement and the casing. It matters because a single-lip seal in a dusty application will fail early, and a double-lip seal adds drag that a light-duty drive may not want.

Seal material and temperature

The compound decides temperature and fluid compatibility, and getting it wrong is the usual cause of a seal that fails within weeks. Nitrile is the default and is fine for mineral oil and grease at moderate temperature. Viton handles heat and aggressive fluids at several times the price.

Shaft condition matters as much as the seal. A shaft with a wear groove from the previous seal will chew a new one; fit a speedi-sleeve or move the seal axially so the lip runs on fresh metal.

How do I read an oil seal size?
Three numbers in order: shaft diameter, housing bore, width. A 30 x 47 x 7 seal fits a 30mm shaft into a 47mm bore and is 7mm wide.
How do I measure for a replacement oil seal?
Measure the shaft diameter and the housing bore with a caliper. Do not measure the old seal: it has taken a compression set and will read undersize on the outside and oversize on the lip.
Which way round does an oil seal go?
The lip and the garter spring face the fluid being retained. Fitting one backwards means the spring is on the dry side and the seal pumps oil straight out.
When should I use Viton instead of nitrile?
Above about 120 °C, or with fuels, synthetic oils and aggressive chemicals that swell nitrile. Below that, nitrile does the job at a fraction of the cost.
The shaft has a groove where the old seal ran. What now?
A worn groove will destroy a new seal quickly. Fit a thin repair sleeve over the shaft to give the lip fresh metal, or move the seal a few millimetres along its bore so the lip contacts an unworn track.
