A deep groove ball bearing number tells you its size. On a four-digit number like 6203, the 6 means single-row deep groove, the 2 is the width and load series, and the last two digits give the bore: multiply by 5 above 04, so 6203 has a 17mm bore, 40mm outside diameter and is 12mm wide.

What a bearing number means

Read a metric bearing number from the left. The first digit is the type: 6 is single-row deep groove, 2 is spherical roller, 3 is taper roller, 7 is angular contact. The second digit is the dimension series, where 0 is light, 2 is medium and 3 is heavy for the same bore.

The last two digits are the bore code. From 04 upward, multiply by 5 to get the bore in millimetres. Below that they are fixed: 00 is 10mm, 01 is 12mm, 02 is 15mm and 03 is 17mm.

So a 6205 and a 6305 share a 25mm bore, but the 6305 is physically bigger and carries more load.

Ball bearing size chart

All three series below share the same bore for a given last-two-digit code. Pick the series by load: 6200 covers most general machinery, 6300 is the heavier option when the same shaft has to carry more, and 6000 is the slim choice when radial space is tight.

Bearing cross reference

The base number is standardised, so a 6203-2RS from any manufacturer has the same 17 x 40 x 12 envelope and will physically fit. What differs is the suffix system: the same bearing is 6203-2RS1 at one maker, 6203-2RSR at another and 6203-DDU at a third.

Cross-reference on the base number and the seal type, then check the clearance code separately. Substituting a C3 bearing where the drawing calls for standard clearance, or the reverse, changes how the bearing behaves once it warms up.

Bearing Size Chart questions

What size is a 6203 bearing?
17mm bore, 40mm outside diameter and 12mm wide. The 03 bore code means 17mm, and the 2 means it is the medium 6200 series.
How do I work out bore size from a bearing number?
Take the last two digits. From 04 upward, multiply by 5 for the bore in millimetres, so 6206 is 30mm. Below that the codes are fixed: 00 is 10mm, 01 is 12mm, 02 is 15mm and 03 is 17mm.
What does 2RS mean on a bearing?
Two rubber contact seals, one each side. It keeps grease in and dirt out but adds a little drag. ZZ means two metal shields instead, which run with less friction but seal less well.
What is C3 clearance and do I need it?
C3 is a larger internal gap than standard. Use it where the bearing will run hot, where the inner ring is a tight interference fit on the shaft, or where the shaft and housing expand at different rates. Both of those close the clearance up in service, and a standard-clearance bearing can end up preloaded and fail early.
Can I swap a 6200 series bearing for a 6300?
Only if the housing allows it. They share the bore for the same bore code but the 6300 has a larger outside diameter and is wider, so it will not drop into a 6200 housing. Going the other way fits but gives up load capacity.
