Retaining Ring Size Chart

External rings to DIN 471 fit a groove on a shaft and are called by the shaft diameter; internal rings to DIN 472 fit a groove in a bore and are called by the bore diameter. A 25mm external circlip is 1.2mm thick and sits in a groove turned to 23.9mm.

Types of retaining ring

Five types cover almost everything. The choice is usually decided by how much room there is and whether the assembly has to come apart again.

External retaining ring sizes

Cut the groove to the diameter and width given, not to the ring thickness. The groove is deliberately slightly wider than the ring so it can seat, and slightly shallower than half the ring width so the ring stands proud enough to take thrust.

Fitting and removing

Use the right pliers. External and internal circlip pliers open in opposite directions and are not interchangeable; forcing the wrong pair distorts the ring and it will not seat.

Do not over-expand. A circlip opened past its elastic limit loses its grip permanently, and a ring that has been stretched will creep out of the groove under vibration. If a ring has been off once and looks opened up, replace it.

The sharp edge from stamping goes away from the load. On a DIN 471 ring the rounded face carries the thrust, so fit the sharp-edged side facing out.

What size circlip do I need for a 25mm shaft?
A 25mm external ring to DIN 471, which is 1.2mm thick and sits in a groove turned to 23.9mm diameter and 1.3mm wide. External rings are always called by the shaft size, not the ring diameter.
What is the difference between internal and external circlips?
External rings to DIN 471 clamp onto a groove on a shaft and are compressed to fit. Internal rings to DIN 472 spring outward into a groove in a bore and are expanded to fit. They need different pliers that open opposite ways.
When should I use a spiral retaining ring?
Where the lugs of a conventional circlip would foul, where you want full 360 degree contact for higher thrust, or where the assembly has no room for pliers. Spiral rings wind into the groove by hand.
Can I reuse a circlip?
Only if it has not been over-expanded. Once a ring has been opened past its elastic limit it never fully closes again and will work out of the groove under vibration. They cost very little; replace them.
Which way round does a retaining ring fit?
The rounded face takes the thrust, so the sharp stamped edge faces away from the load. On most assemblies that means the sharp side faces outward.
