What do machinists actually use this dial indicator for?
It measures small movements up to 10mm with 0.01mm resolution, so it's used to check runout on shafts and rotors. People also use it for surface flatness and dialing in machinery or jigs. The analog dial gives a fast visual read.
Will this fit my magnetic base or indicator stand?
The stem is 8mm, which is a common diameter for magnetic bases and articulating holders. The contact point uses an M2.5 x 0.45 thread, so you can swap in standard tips. Check that your holder accepts an 8mm stem before buying.
Is 0.01mm precision fine enough for tight tolerance work?
It resolves down to 0.01mm, which suits general runout, flatness, and setup checks. For tolerances finer than a hundredth of a millimeter, you'd want a higher-resolution test indicator instead. Keep it within 0 to 40C for accurate readings.
