The first step in choosing a load cell is determining the required capacity. This is the maximum weight the sensor can measure accurately. Always select a capacity that safely exceeds your maximum expected load to prevent damage from shock or overloading. For applications requiring verified precision, look for an accuracy class rating. An OIML C3 rating, for example, indicates the cell meets international standards for linearity and repeatability, making it suitable for commercial scales. For other industrial processes, check specifications like creep and hysteresis to ensure the sensor's stability over time.
The physical design of a load cell determines how it should be installed and used. Matching the type of load cell to the application is key for reliable measurement.
S-type load cells are designed to measure both tension (pulling) and compression (pushing) forces, making them suitable for hopper scales or suspended weighing systems. Single point load cells are built for platform scales, compensating for off-center loads. For industrial settings with moisture, dust, or corrosive agents, alloy steel or stainless steel provide superior durability and longevity.
