Torque in lb-ft equals horsepower times 5,252 divided by rpm, and to get newton metres multiply by 1.356. A 10 hp motor at 1,750 rpm produces 30 lb-ft, or about 41 Nm. Speed is the whole story: the same 10 hp at 3,500 rpm gives half the torque, which is why gearboxes exist.

Torque in lb-ft equals hp times 5,252 divided by rpm. Halve the speed and you double the torque for the same power.

Where 5,252 comes from

One horsepower is 33,000 foot-pounds per minute. Torque times rotational speed gives power, and the rotation adds a factor of 2 pi per revolution. So hp = T x rpm x 2 pi / 33,000, and 33,000 divided by 2 pi is 5,252. That is the constant, and it is why torque and horsepower curves on a dyno always cross at 5,252 rpm.

In metric the equivalent is kW = T(Nm) x rpm / 9,549. To convert lb-ft to Nm multiply by 1.3558.

Full-load torque of standard motors

A motor nameplate gives horsepower and speed, not torque. This is what those combinations deliver at the shaft, which is what you need to check against a gearbox, coupling or driven machine rating.

How do I convert horsepower to torque?
Multiply hp by 5,252 and divide by rpm to get lb-ft. Multiply that by 1.356 for newton metres. A 10 hp motor at 1,750 rpm gives 30 lb-ft or 41 Nm.
How do I convert Nm to hp?
Divide Nm by 1.356 to get lb-ft, then multiply by rpm and divide by 5,252. Or use kW = Nm x rpm / 9,549 and multiply kW by 1.341 for horsepower.
Why does torque go up when speed goes down?
Because power is torque times speed. For a fixed power, halving the speed doubles the torque. That is what a gearbox does: it trades speed for torque while the power stays the same, minus losses.
Why do hp and torque curves cross at 5,252 rpm?
Because hp = torque x rpm / 5,252. At exactly 5,252 rpm the two numbers are equal by definition, so any dyno chart plotting both in lb-ft and hp shows them crossing there.
