Driven rpm equals drive pulley diameter times drive rpm, divided by driven pulley diameter. A 4 inch motor pulley at 1,750 rpm driving an 8 inch pulley turns it at 875 rpm. Bigger driven pulley, slower shaft and more torque; smaller driven pulley, faster shaft and less torque.

The pulley formulas

D1 x N1 = D2 x N2, where D is diameter and N is speed. Rearrange for whichever you need: N2 = D1 x N1 / D2, or D2 = D1 x N1 / N2.

Ratio is D2 / D1. A ratio above 1 is a speed reduction and a torque increase; below 1 is a speed increase.

Belt speed in feet per minute is pi x D x N / 12 with D in inches. It is the same on both pulleys, and it is what limits how fast a belt drive can run: classical V-belts are happiest under 6,500 fpm.

Common pulley combinations from a 1,750 rpm motor

A four-pole induction motor runs close to 1,750 rpm under load. These are the shaft speeds you get from common pulley pairs on one.

Pulley Speed Calculator questions

How do I calculate pulley speed?
Multiply the drive pulley diameter by its rpm and divide by the driven pulley diameter. A 4 inch pulley at 1,750 rpm driving an 8 inch pulley gives 875 rpm.
What pulley size do I need for a target speed?
Driven diameter equals drive diameter times drive rpm divided by the speed you want. To get 1,200 rpm from a 1,750 rpm motor with a 4 inch pulley, the driven pulley is 4 x 1,750 / 1,200, so about 5.8 inches.
Does the belt length change the speed?
No. Only the two pulley diameters set the ratio. Belt length affects centre distance and wrap angle, which matter for grip and belt life, not for speed.
How fast can a V-belt run?
Classical A through D sections are rated to about 6,500 feet per minute and narrow 3V, 5V and 8V sections to about 8,000. Above that the belt throws itself off the pulley under centrifugal load.
