ASME B16.5 fixes flange dimensions by nominal size and pressure class. A Class 150 four inch flange is 9.00 inch outside diameter with a 7.50 inch bolt circle and eight 5/8 inch bolts. Class and size together determine every dimension, so a Class 300 flange of the same size is larger and takes bigger bolts.

Class 150 flange dimensions

Class 150 is the common flange for water, air and low-pressure process work. Bolt circle is the diameter through the bolt hole centres, and it is the dimension that decides whether two flanges will actually mate.

Class 300 flange dimensions

Class 300 carries roughly double the pressure of Class 150 at the same temperature. Everything grows: outside diameter, bolt circle, bolt count and bolt size. A Class 150 and a Class 300 flange of the same nominal size will not bolt together.

Bolting a flange

Tighten in a criss-cross star pattern, never round the circle. On an eight-bolt flange the sequence is 1, 5, 3, 7, 2, 6, 4, 8, working across the diameter each time.

Use at least three passes: 30 percent of final torque, then 60, then 100, then a final pass round the circle at full torque to catch relaxation. ASME PCC-1 sets this out in detail and is worth following on anything that holds pressure.

Gasket compression is what seals the joint, not bolt tightness for its own sake. Over-torquing crushes the gasket and the joint leaks as soon as it cycles. Re-torque after the first thermal cycle on hot service.

What are the dimensions of a 4 inch Class 150 flange?

Can I bolt a Class 150 flange to a Class 300?
No. The bolt circles and hole counts differ at almost every size, and even where holes line up the raised face heights and gasket seating differ. They are not interchangeable.
What is bolt circle diameter?
The diameter of the circle through the centres of the bolt holes. It is the dimension that decides whether two flanges will mate, more so than the outside diameter.
What order do I tighten flange bolts in?
A criss-cross star pattern, working across the diameter each time, in at least three passes at 30, 60 and 100 percent of final torque. Finish with one pass round the circle at full torque to pick up relaxation.
What does ASME B16.5 cover?
Pipe flanges and flanged fittings from 1/2 inch through 24 inch, in pressure classes 150 through 2500. Above 24 inch the equivalent standard is ASME B16.47.
