Lower gauge number is thicker wire and carries more current further. For a 15 amp tool, 14 gauge is fine to 50 feet and 12 gauge to 100 feet. Below that a long thin cord drops the voltage at the tool, the motor draws more current to compensate, and it overheats. When in doubt buy 12 gauge; the cost difference is small and it covers almost everything.

Find the current the tool draws on its nameplate, then read across to the cord length. If the tool sits between two rows, use the higher current.

Why a thin cord damages tools

A cord that is too thin for the run drops voltage along its length. A universal motor responds to low voltage by drawing more current to make the same power, and that extra current is what overheats the windings. The tool feels weak, runs hot, and its life is shortened.

The cord itself gets warm as well. A 16 gauge cord feeding a 15 amp saw at 100 feet is dropping around 8 percent, and that heat is going into the jacket. If a cord is warm to the touch it is undersized.

Reading the jacket markings

The jacket carries a code such as SJTW 12/3. The number before the slash is the gauge and the number after is the conductor count, so 12/3 is 12 gauge with three conductors including ground.

The letters describe the jacket. S is a flexible service cord; J means junior, rated to 300 volts, which covers all household and workshop use; T is thermoplastic; W is weather and water resistant for outdoor use. SJTW is the common outdoor workshop cord. A cord without W is indoor only.

Extension Cord Gauge Chart questions

What gauge extension cord do I need?
14 gauge to 50 feet and 12 gauge to 100 feet for a 15 amp tool. For a 20 amp load or anything over 100 feet, 10 gauge. If you only buy one cord, buy 12 gauge.
Is a 16 gauge extension cord enough?
For a work light or a drill up to about 10 amps at 50 feet, yes. Not for a circular saw, compressor or heater, and not for anything at 100 feet. It drops too much voltage and the tool overheats.
What does 12/3 mean on an extension cord?
12 gauge wire with three conductors: live, neutral and ground. 14/3 is 14 gauge with three conductors, and 16/2 is thin two-conductor cord with no ground.
Can I plug one extension cord into another?
Electrically it is the same as one cord of the combined length, so size the gauge for the total run. Physically it adds a joint that can pull apart or get wet, so it is better to buy one cord of the right length.
