Conduit Fill Chart

Conduit fill is capped at 40 percent of internal area for three or more conductors, 31 percent for two and 53 percent for one. In practice that means 1/2 inch EMT takes 9 twelve-gauge THHN conductors, 3/4 inch takes 16, and 1 inch takes 26.

EMT conduit dimensions

Trade size is a name, not a measurement. Half-inch EMT has an internal diameter of 0.622 inch, not 0.5. The internal area is what the fill calculation uses.

Maximum conductors in EMT

This is the table most jobs actually need. It assumes THHN or THWN insulation and three or more current-carrying conductors, so the 40 percent rule applies.

Remember that filling a conduit to the limit is not the same as a legal circuit. Once you have more than three current-carrying conductors in the same raceway, NEC 310.15(C)(1) derates their ampacity, and the derate can force a larger conductor before fill ever becomes the constraint.

The fill percentages and how to calculate

NEC Chapter 9 Table 1 sets three limits: one conductor may occupy 53 percent of the internal area, two conductors 31 percent, and three or more 40 percent. The 31 percent figure for two is lower than for three because two round conductors jam rather than nest.

To work a mixed run by hand, add the individual conductor areas from Chapter 9 Table 5 and compare the total against the 40 percent column above. THHN areas are 0.0097 in² for 14 AWG, 0.0133 for 12, 0.0211 for 10, 0.0366 for 8 and 0.0507 for 6.

Bends matter separately. No run may contain more than 360 degrees of bend between pull points, however much room is left in the conduit.

Conduit Fill Chart questions

How many 12 AWG wires fit in 1/2 inch EMT?
Nine THHN conductors at the 40 percent fill limit. In 3/4 inch it is 16, and in 1 inch it is 26.
What is the actual inside diameter of 1/2 inch EMT?
0.622 inch, giving 0.304 square inches of internal area. Trade size is a name rather than a dimension, so it never matches the measurement.
Why is the limit 40 percent and not more?
The spare space is for pulling and for heat. Conductors have to slide past each other without stripping insulation, and a packed conduit traps heat that the derating tables then have to account for.
Does the ground wire count towards fill?
Yes. Every conductor in the raceway counts towards the fill percentage, including equipment grounding conductors. It does not count as a current-carrying conductor for the ampacity derate, which is a separate calculation.
Can I fill a conduit to exactly 40 percent?
You can, and Annex C already does that arithmetic for you for uniform conductors. On a real pull it is worth going a size up, because a conduit at the limit is hard work and the derating for more than three current-carrying conductors often pushes you there anyway.
