Aluminium Grades Chart

The first digit of an aluminium grade tells you the main alloying element and roughly what it is for. 5xxx is magnesium and is the marine series, with 5083 and 5052 the usual choices for anything in salt water. 6xxx is magnesium-silicon and is the general structural series, with 6061 and 6082 the workhorse extrusions. 7xxx is zinc and is the strongest, with 7075 approaching mild steel, but it corrodes and cannot be welded.

The aluminium alloy series

Four digits identify a wrought alloy. The first is the series and tells you the main alloying element; the rest identify the specific alloy within it. A temper code follows the grade, such as 6061-T6, and describes the heat treatment.

Marine aluminium grades

The 5xxx series is the marine series because magnesium gives it a stable oxide layer that resists chlorides, and because it does not rely on heat treatment for strength, so welding does not create a soft zone.

5083 is the boatbuilding standard for hulls and structure. 5052 is the lighter-duty choice for fittings, tanks and trim. Both are supplied in the H116 or H321 tempers for marine work, which are stabilised against the stress corrosion cracking that can affect high-magnesium alloys after long exposure to warm salt water.

6061 and 6082 are acceptable for above-waterline structure and fittings that stay dry, but they pit if left in salt water and the heat-affected zone of a weld loses roughly a third of its strength. 7075 has no place in a marine environment.

Aluminium hardness

Aluminium hardness is quoted on the Brinell scale with a 500 kg load, and the range is wide. Pure 1100-O is around 23 HB and dents with a fingernail; 7075-T6 is around 150 HB, close to a mild steel.

The temper matters more than the grade for hardness. 6061 goes from about 30 HB annealed to 95 HB in T6. If a part has to resist wear or hold a thread, specify the temper, not just the alloy.

Aluminium Grades Chart questions

What grade of aluminium is best for marine use?
5083 for hulls and structure, 5052 for fittings, tanks and lighter parts. Both are 5xxx magnesium alloys with excellent resistance to salt water and full strength after welding. Ask for the H116 or H321 temper for marine service.
What is the difference between 6061 and 7075?
7075 is nearly twice as strong, with a yield around 505 MPa against 275 for 6061-T6, but it cannot be welded, corrodes readily and costs far more. 6061 welds, extrudes and resists corrosion well enough for most structural work.
Can I weld 6061 aluminium?
Yes, with 4043 or 5356 filler, but the heat-affected zone loses roughly a third of its T6 strength and does not recover without re-heat-treating the whole part. Design welded 6061 structures on the as-welded strength, not the T6 figure.
How hard is aluminium?
It depends heavily on grade and temper. Pure aluminium is around 23 HB and very soft; 6061-T6 is about 95 HB; 7075-T6 reaches 150 HB, close to a mild steel. Specify the temper if hardness matters.
What do the temper codes mean?
O is annealed and soft. H followed by digits is strain hardened, used on non-heat-treatable alloys like 5052 and 5083. T followed by a digit is heat treated, with T6 meaning solution treated and artificially aged, the common strong condition for 6061 and 7075.
