Gauge runs backwards: the higher the number, the thinner the sheet. 18 gauge mild steel is 0.0478 inch or 1.21mm, 14 gauge is 0.0747 inch or 1.90mm. The number is not a measurement, so the same gauge is a different thickness in every material: 18 gauge aluminium is 0.0403 inch and 18 gauge stainless is 0.0500 inch.

These are the four systems you meet in a workshop. Mild steel and galvanised use the Manufacturers Standard Gauge, stainless uses its own, and aluminium uses the Brown and Sharpe system, which is why an aluminium sheet of the same gauge always feels thinner.

Galvanised is the same base steel plus the zinc coating, so a galvanised sheet is slightly thicker than plain steel at the same gauge.

Why the gauge numbers run backwards

The system came from wire drawing. A wire was pulled through a die a number of times to reduce it, and the gauge number counted the passes. More passes meant a thinner wire, so a bigger number meant less material. Sheet inherited the same numbering.

That history is also why the number carries no unit and does not convert between materials. Always confirm which material a gauge figure refers to before ordering, and where it matters, specify the thickness in millimetres instead and let the gauge follow.

What each gauge is used for

20 and 22 gauge is ducting and light enclosure work. 18 gauge is the common choice for brackets, guards and general fabrication where the part has to hold shape but still bend on a small brake.

14 and 16 gauge is structural sheet: tool boxes, machine panels, trailer skins. 14 gauge is around the limit for a hand brake in anything wider than a few hundred millimetres.

10 and 12 gauge needs a powered brake and is usually welded rather than folded. At 7 gauge and thicker the material is normally called plate rather than sheet.

Sheet Metal Gauge Chart questions

How thick is 18 gauge steel?
0.0478 inch, or 1.21mm, in mild steel. In galvanised it is 0.0516 inch because of the zinc coating, in stainless 0.0500 inch, and in aluminium only 0.0403 inch.
How thick is 14 gauge steel?
0.0747 inch, or 1.90mm, in mild steel. That is roughly half again as thick as 16 gauge and about 55 percent thicker than 18 gauge.
Is 10 gauge thicker than 14 gauge?
Yes. Gauge numbers run backwards, so a lower number is a thicker sheet. 10 gauge steel is 0.1345 inch against 0.0747 inch for 14 gauge, close to double.
Why is aluminium a different thickness at the same gauge?
Aluminium is graded on the Brown and Sharpe system rather than the Manufacturers Standard Gauge used for steel. The two scales were developed separately and never reconciled, so 18 gauge aluminium is 0.0403 inch against 0.0478 inch for steel.
What gauge should I use for a bracket?
16 or 18 gauge covers most bracket work. 18 gauge folds easily on a small brake and holds shape for light loads; 16 gauge is the step up where the part carries weight or gets knocked about.
