Ah to Wh Calculator

Author: Emma Clarke, Reference Desk3 min readReviewed

Watt hours equal amp hours times volts. A 100 Ah battery at 12 volts holds 1,200 Wh; a 5 Ah tool battery at 18 volts holds 90 Wh. Amp hours alone say nothing about energy, which is why a 5 Ah 18 V pack outlasts a 5 Ah 12 V pack. To estimate run time, divide watt hours by load watts and then knock off 20 percent for the depth of discharge the chemistry tolerates.

Converters. Based on IEC 61960, IEC 60896.

Ah to Wh calculator

Convert either way, or estimate run time from capacity, voltage and load. Run time uses 80 percent depth of discharge, which suits lead-acid and is conservative for lithium.

Energy
1,200 Wh

The formulas

Wh = Ah x V, and Ah = Wh / V.

Run time in hours = (Ah x V x depth of discharge) / load watts. Depth of discharge is 0.5 for a lead-acid battery you want to last, 0.8 for one you are willing to cycle harder, and 0.9 or better for lithium iron phosphate.

Capacity is rated at a particular discharge rate, usually 20 hours for lead-acid, and falls if you pull current faster. A 100 Ah lead-acid battery discharged over 5 hours delivers closer to 80 Ah. Lithium is far less affected.

Cordless tool battery energy

Tool batteries are sold on amp hours, which makes a 12 V pack look the same as an 18 V one. Compare on watt hours to see what you are actually getting.

Ah to Wh Calculator questions

How do I convert Ah to Wh?
Multiply amp hours by volts. A 100 Ah battery at 12 volts is 1,200 Wh. A 5 Ah tool battery at 18 volts is 90 Wh.
How long will a 100 Ah battery run a 100 watt load?
About 9.6 hours from a 12 volt battery at 80 percent depth of discharge: 100 x 12 x 0.8 / 100. Pull it to 50 percent to protect a lead-acid battery and it is 6 hours.
Is a 5 Ah 12 V battery the same as a 5 Ah 18 V battery?
No. The 18 volt pack holds 90 Wh against 60 Wh for the 12 volt, half as much again. Amp hours only compare packs of the same voltage; watt hours compare anything.
What is depth of discharge?
How much of the capacity you use before recharging. Lead-acid batteries last longest cycled to 50 percent and tolerate 80 percent occasionally. Lithium iron phosphate is happy at 80 to 90 percent routinely, which is why a smaller lithium bank matches a bigger lead-acid one.
