Match Disc Type and Material to Your Application

The type of disc dictates its primary function. Standard sanding discs are used for surface smoothing and preparation. Flap discs, with their overlapping abrasive flaps, are better for aggressive stock removal and blending welds. Poly strip discs excel at removing paint and rust without damaging the base metal. For cutting, choose thin resin-bonded or composite wheels rated for your material, such as metal, tile, or PVC.

The abrasive material is equally important. Aluminium Oxide is the industry standard for wood and ferrous metals, offering good durability and cut rate. Silicon Carbide is harder and sharper, making it effective on harder materials like stone and glass, and for wet sanding applications. Choose the material that provides the best performance and lifespan for your specific task.

Select the Right Grit: From 80 Grit Stripping to 2000 Grit Polishing

Abrasive grit size determines the coarseness of the disc and the resulting surface finish. The number comes from the mesh used to grade the grain, so a lower number means larger grains and a more aggressive cut.

Use coarse grits, like 40 to 80 grit sanding discs, for heavy stock removal, stripping paint, or leveling uneven surfaces. Medium grits from 100 to 220 are used for general purpose sanding and preparing surfaces for coatings. Fine grits, from 240 up to 2000 and beyond, are for final finishing, polishing, and sanding between coats.

Ensure Tool Compatibility: Attachment, Diameter, and Hole Pattern

Your disc must match your power tool. Check the attachment type first. Hook and loop sanding discs offer fast changes and are common on orbital sanders. Adhesive backing provides a secure, no-slip fit. Other systems like Roll Lock are specific to die grinders and other tools.

The disc diameter must match your tool's backing pad. We stock sizes from 25mm for detail work up to 225mm for large surface sanders. Using the wrong size is unsafe and ineffective.

For random orbital sanders, the hole pattern on the disc must align with the holes on the backing pad. This allows for effective dust extraction, which improves visibility, extends disc life by reducing clogging, and creates a healthier work environment. 8-hole patterns on 125mm discs are a common standard.

Buying guide

Choosing Sanding Discs

What is the difference between Aluminium Oxide and Silicon Carbide discs?
Aluminium Oxide is a durable, all-purpose abrasive ideal for sanding and grinding wood and most metals. Silicon Carbide is harder and sharper, making it better for sanding harder materials like stone, glass, plastics, and for wet sanding applications where it provides a finer finish.
What is a hook and loop sanding disc?
A hook and loop sanding disc uses a backing similar to Velcro. The 'hook' side on the sander's backing pad grips the 'loop' material on the back of the disc. This system allows for quick and easy disc changes without tools.
How do I use Dremel sanding discs or other small rotary tool discs?
Small-diameter discs are typically mounted on a compatible mandrel with a shank. Secure the disc to the mandrel, then insert the shank into the collet of your rotary tool. They are designed for precision work in tight areas, such as deburring, model making, or detailed shaping.
Does the hole pattern on my sanding disc matter?
Yes, for orbital sanders, the hole pattern is critical for dust extraction. You must match the disc's hole pattern (e.g., 8-hole) to your sander's backing pad. Correct alignment allows dust to be pulled through the tool, reducing clogging and improving the work environment.
What grit should I use for finishing metal before painting?
For general metal finishing before priming and painting, a final pass with a 180 to 220 grit disc is often sufficient. This creates a smooth surface with enough of a profile, or 'tooth', for the primer to adhere to properly.
