Selecting V-Belt Types and Materials

The first step is to identify the correct belt construction for your application. Our catalog includes several distinct v-belt types. Standard endless rubber belts, such as Type A, are common for general-purpose power transmission in a wide range of machinery.

For drives with smaller pulley diameters, a serrated or cogged v-belt may be required. The serrations allow the belt to bend more easily around a tight radius without building up excess heat or stress. For unique situations, polyurethane link v-belts offer a key advantage: they can be assembled to any length by hand. This makes them a practical solution for emergency repairs, difficult-to-access drives, or applications like industrial furnaces where a custom fit is necessary.

How to Determine Correct V-Belt Sizes

Proper fit is critical for performance and belt lifespan. An incorrect length will lead to improper tension, causing slippage or excessive strain on bearings. Always check the existing belt for markings indicating its size and type, such as 'A38' for a Type A belt with a 38-inch length.

Choosing V-Belts

When should I choose a polyurethane link v-belt over a standard rubber one?
Choose a polyurethane link belt when you need a custom length, have a drive that is difficult to dismantle for installation, or for vibration-sensitive equipment. Their link-based construction allows for on-the-spot assembly and their material properties can offer low-noise operation, as seen in applications like industrial furnaces.
My belt is marked 'A42'. What does that mean and what size do I need?
The letter 'A' designates the belt's cross-section profile, which must match the groove in your pulleys. The number '42' typically indicates the belt's internal length in inches. You should select a 'Type A' v-belt with a 42-inch length to ensure compatibility.
Are serrated v-belts better for high-power industrial applications?
Not necessarily. The primary advantage of a serrated (cogged) belt is increased flexibility, making it ideal for drives with small-diameter pulleys, like those found on some light-duty motors. For high-power or high-torque applications, you must verify the belt's specific power rating on its datasheet.
Can I use a slightly longer belt and just increase the tensioner adjustment?
This is not recommended. Using an incorrect length compromises the drive's design, leading to improper tension. This can cause belt slippage, heat buildup, premature wear, and damage to shaft bearings. Always use the specific length designated for the drive system.
What is the difference between v-belt profiles like Type A and MB Series?
Type A is a standard cross-section profile with specific width and angle dimensions. The MB Series is a manufacturer's designation for a specific family of serrated belts.
