The choice between a pt100 sensor and a pt1000 sensor depends on your instrument input and lead wire length. A 3-wire configuration helps compensate for lead wire resistance over longer distances, which prevents measurement drift. For standard industrial controllers and PLC inputs, the 100-ohm platinum resistance probe is the industry baseline.

  • 3-Wire Systems: Best for cancelling out lead wire resistance in long runs up to 5 meters or more.
  • PT100 vs PT1000: PT100 is standard for industrial PLCs, while PT1000 offers higher resistance changes per degree, often preferred for battery-powered or high-impedance devices.

Selecting Mounting Threads and Probe Dimensions

Choosing RTD & PT100 Sensors

Can I use a 3-wire PT100 sensor with a 2-wire controller?
Yes, you can connect a 3-wire RTD sensor to a 2-wire input by joining the two common-colored wires together or leaving one unconnected, depending on the controller. However, this configuration eliminates the lead-wire resistance compensation. For the most accurate readings over distance, always use a native 3-wire connection.
When should I choose a copper screw RTD over a stainless steel probe?
Copper M3 or M4 screw sensors are ideal for applications requiring fast thermal response at specific points, such as 3D printer heater blocks. Stainless steel sheaths are better for corrosive, high-pressure, or high-temperature environments like boilers and industrial ovens where physical protection of the platinum element is critical.
What are the temperature limits for silicone-insulated RTD probes?
Our silicone-insulated pt100 temperature sensor models typically operate within a range of -50 to 260 degrees Celsius. Exceeding this range can damage the cable insulation and lead to short circuits or signal drift. For applications up to 420 degrees Celsius, select a stainless steel probe with appropriate high-temperature termination.
How do I select the right thread size for a process pipe installation?
Match the sensor head thread to your existing thermowell or pipe port. We supply thread sizes ranging from 1/8 inch up to 3/4 inch, including standard 1/2 inch NPT options. Ensure the probe length extends sufficiently into the medium to get an accurate reading without restricting fluid flow.
Why is my RTD sensor reading higher than the actual process temperature?
This is often caused by self-heating from excessive excitation current supplied by the transmitter or controller. It can also occur if lead-wire resistance is not properly compensated in a 2-wire setup. Ensure your instrument's excitation current is kept low, or upgrade to a 3-wire rtd temperature probe.
