The Yankee screwdriver is a push-to-turn driver that uses an Archimedean spiral mechanism inside the handle. Push the handle forward and the bit spins. Release, and a spring returns the handle to its starting position. Repeat to drive a screw in seconds - no wrist rotation required.
History
The spiral ratchet screwdriver was patented in 1895 by the North Brothers Manufacturing Company of Philadelphia. They branded it the "Yankee." Stanley Works acquired North Brothers in 1946, and the Stanley Yankee became one of the best-selling hand tools of the 20th century. The tool was standard issue for tradespeople from the 1900s through the 1970s, before cordless power screwdrivers gradually replaced it.
How the Spiral Mechanism Works
- The shaft has a helical (spiral) groove machined along its length.
- A pin inside the handle rides in this groove.
- When you push the handle toward the workpiece, the pin forces the shaft to rotate as it slides forward.
- A compressed spring inside the handle returns the shaft to the extended position when you release pressure.
- A selector switch lets you choose clockwise (drive), counter-clockwise (remove), or locked (use as a standard screwdriver).

Is It Still Worth Buying?
For most users, a cordless screwdriver has replaced the Yankee. But the Yankee still has niche appeal: it needs no batteries, has no motor to burn out, and works in any weather. Electricians, boat builders, and hand-tool enthusiasts still use them. Stanley continues to manufacture the Yankee (model 69-189) with a 1/4" hex bit holder that accepts modern bits, solving the old proprietary bit problem.
