A ratchet screwdriver has an internal gear mechanism that allows the handle to turn in one direction while the bit stays locked. You tighten a screw by twisting forward, then your hand returns without rotating the bit. No lifting, no re-seating - just continuous driving.

How the Ratchet Mechanism Works

Inside the handle, a set of spring-loaded pawls engage with a toothed gear ring. A directional switch controls which way the pawls lock:

  • Forward (clockwise lock) - for driving/tightening screws
  • Reverse (counter-clockwise lock) - for removing screws
  • Locked - both directions locked, works like a standard screwdriver for final torque

The tooth count of the gear ring determines how fine the ratchet action is. Higher tooth counts (60–72 teeth) allow smaller return angles, which is critical in tight spaces where you can only swing the handle a few degrees at a time.
