A voltage tester screwdriver is one of the simplest electrical testing tools ever made - a flat head screwdriver with a neon lamp and a high-value resistor inside the handle. It does one thing: tells you whether a conductor is live.
How It Works
The circuit is simple. Touch the screwdriver tip to a live conductor. Place your finger on the metal cap at the end of the handle. A tiny current flows from the live conductor, through the internal resistor (typically 500 kilohms to 1 megohm), through the neon lamp, through the metal cap, through your body, and to earth ground through your feet. The current is extremely small - typically under 0.5 milliamps - far below the threshold of sensation. But it is enough to ionise the neon gas in the lamp, causing it to glow.
No batteries required. The mains voltage itself powers the test. This is why neon tester screwdrivers have lasted decades with zero maintenance.
What It Detects
- AC mains voltage - typically 100V to 250V AC (varies by model)
- Live vs neutral in a socket or junction box
- Whether a circuit breaker has actually disconnected power
What It Cannot Do
This is where people get into trouble:
- Cannot measure voltage - it only confirms presence, not level
- Cannot detect DC voltage - the neon lamp requires AC to sustain ionisation
- Cannot detect low voltage - anything below ~70-100V AC will not light the lamp
- Can give false negatives if you are insulated from ground (rubber-soled shoes on a dry floor)
- Can give false positives from induced voltage on long cable runs near live conductors
Never rely on a neon tester screwdriver as your sole means of confirming a circuit is dead. Always verify with a proper voltage tester or multimeter. The neon tester is a quick first check - not a definitive safety tool.
Touch vs Non-Contact Testers
Non-contact voltage detectors (NCVDs) are pen-shaped tools that sense the electromagnetic field around a live conductor without touching it. They beep or light up when brought near a live wire. NCVDs are safer - no current flows through the user - but they are also more prone to false positives from electromagnetic interference, and they require batteries.
Many electricians carry both: the non-contact detector for initial proximity testing, and the neon tester screwdriver for confirmation at the conductor itself. The tester screwdriver also doubles as an actual flat head screwdriver for terminal work.
Why Electricians Still Carry Them
Despite the availability of digital multimeters and non-contact detectors, neon tester screwdrivers persist because they are instant (no power-on delay), need no batteries, fit in a shirt pocket, and double as a working screwdriver. For a quick "is this live?" check before touching a terminal, nothing is faster.
