Insulated screwdrivers have a non-conductive coating over the shaft that protects the user from electric shock. VDE-certified tools are individually tested to 10,000V AC and rated for continuous use at 1,000V AC / 1,500V DC. They are a legal requirement for electrical work in many jurisdictions.
What does VDE stand for
VDE stands for Verband der Elektrotechnik, Elektronik und Informationstechnik, the German electrical engineering association. Its testing institute in Offenbach certifies tools against IEC 60900, the international standard for insulated hand tools used on or near live parts up to 1,000 V AC. A VDE screwdriver set is a set that has passed that testing, one tool at a time, and carries the VDE triangle mark to prove it.
VDE Certification Explained
The VDE mark on an insulated screwdriver means:
- Each individual tool has been tested at 10,000V AC
- Rated for safe continuous use at 1,000V AC / 1,500V DC
- Meets IEC 60900 international standard
- The insulation has been verified for mechanical strength, flame resistance, and dielectric properties
- Distinct two-colour insulation (typically red over yellow) - if the red outer layer is damaged, the yellow shows through as a warning

How to tell if a screwdriver is insulated
A plastic handle does not make a screwdriver insulated. Every ordinary screwdriver has one, and the bare steel shaft still conducts. An insulated screwdriver has a moulded sleeve over the whole shaft that stops a few millimetres short of the tip, so only the working end is exposed. Look for four things:
- A marking of 1000V or 1,000 V on the handle or sleeve, with the double triangle symbol that means the tool is tested for live work
- IEC 60900 or EN 60900 printed on the tool, ideally next to a VDE or GS mark from the test house
- Insulation that is moulded onto the shaft, not a heat-shrink sleeve or a dipped coating that can slide or crack
- Two colours of insulation, usually red over yellow, so damage to the outer layer shows up as a colour change
If none of that is present, treat the screwdriver as uninsulated no matter how thick the handle is. Most screwdrivers sold are not insulated, and the ones that are cost more for the testing, not the plastic.
How to Identify Genuine VDE Tools
Spotting Real vs Fake VDE Insulation
- Look for the VDE triangle mark - not just the words "insulated" or "1000V"
- Two-layer insulation: red outer layer, yellow inner layer (warning indicator)
- Individual serial/batch number on each tool
- IEC 60900 compliance marking
- Buy from reputable brands: Wera, Wiha, Knipex, Felo, Bahco
Never use tape, heat-shrink, or dipped coatings as a substitute for VDE insulation. Only purpose-built, individually tested VDE tools provide reliable protection at mains voltage.
