VDE Insulated Screwdriver Sets

A neon voltage tester screwdriver looks like a flat head with a translucent handle. Touch the tip to a conductor and place your finger on the metal cap - if the circuit is live, a small neon lamp in the handle glows. These testers detect AC voltage (typically 100–250V) and draw a tiny current through the user's body to ground - not enough to feel, but enough to light the neon lamp.
Limitations: neon testers only confirm "live or not live." They cannot measure voltage, detect DC, or test low-voltage circuits. Professional electricians carry them as a quick-check tool alongside a proper multimeter or non-contact voltage detector.
Terminal Screwdrivers
Terminal screwdrivers have narrow, parallel-ground blades designed specifically for screw terminal blocks. Unlike a standard flat head where the blade tapers, a terminal blade has parallel sides that sit flat in the terminal slot without riding up. Blade widths of 3.0 mm and 3.5 mm cover most DIN-rail terminal blocks.

Inspect VDE insulation before every use. Any crack, cut, or wear in the sleeve means the tool is no longer rated for live work. Replace it - do not tape over damage.
Slotted vs Phillips in Electrical Work
Electrical work is one of the last bastions of the flat head screw. Terminal blocks, bus bars, and many switch mechanisms use slotted screws because they allow quick quarter-turn adjustments and are easy to clean with the blade edge. Panel covers and mounting hardware lean Phillips. An electrician needs both - heavily weighted toward slotted.
