Torx Dominates Modern Cars

Torx is the dominant fastener type in automotive work for three reasons: it handles higher torque than Phillips without cam-out, it engages positively for power tool use on assembly lines, and it resists wear across thousands of installations. European manufacturers (BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volkswagen) went Torx-heavy earliest. Japanese and American manufacturers followed through the 1990s and 2000s.

The most-used automotive Torx sizes are T15, T20, T25, T27, and T30 for general work, with T40, T45, and T55 for heavy-duty applications like brake calipers and structural fasteners.

Impact Screwdrivers for Seized Fasteners

Seized, rusted, or thread-locked screws are a constant in automotive work. A manual impact screwdriver converts a hammer blow into rotational force - you set it to "loosen," place the bit in the screw head, and strike the end cap with a hammer. The internal cam mechanism converts the downward force into a sharp rotational snap that breaks the fastener free.

This is essential for brake rotor set screws (which are often corroded in place), exhaust manifold bolts, and any fastener that has been torqued and exposed to heat cycling. Trying to force these with a standard screwdriver strips the head.

Insulated Screwdrivers for Hybrid and EV Work

Hybrid and electric vehicles have high-voltage battery systems (typically 200–800V DC). Any work near the battery pack, inverter, or high-voltage cabling requires VDE-rated insulated tools. This includes insulated Torx and hex drivers - not just flat head and Phillips. The orange-coloured high-voltage cables in hybrids and EVs are a clear indicator that insulated tools are mandatory.
