How a Manual Impact Screwdriver Works

  1. Insert the correct bit (Phillips, flat, hex, or Torx) into the chuck
  2. Set the rotation direction - counter-clockwise to loosen, clockwise to tighten
  3. Place the bit firmly into the screw head and push down hard
  4. Strike the end cap sharply with a ball-peen hammer or mallet
  5. The internal cam converts the downward hammer blow into a simultaneous rotational and downward force
  6. Repeat until the fastener breaks loose
Pro Tip

Apply penetrating oil (like PB Blaster) to seized fasteners 10–15 minutes before using an impact screwdriver. The combination of chemical loosening and mechanical impact is far more effective than either alone.

When to Use an Impact Screwdriver

  • Corroded or rusted screws - especially on motorcycles, boats, and outdoor equipment
  • Cross-threaded fasteners that resist normal removal
  • Automotive work - brake caliper bolts, rotor screws, exhaust manifold bolts
  • Any fastener where a standard driver just spins or strips the head
