A cordless screwdriver is a battery-powered driver built for driving and removing screws - lighter and more compact than a drill/driver, with lower torque and no chuck for drill bits. They excel at repetitive light-to-medium fastening tasks where a full drill is overkill.
Li-ion vs NiCad Batteries
Lithium-ion (Li-ion) has almost entirely replaced Nickel-Cadmium (NiCad) in cordless screwdrivers. Li-ion batteries are lighter, hold their charge longer between uses, have no memory effect, and deliver consistent power until depleted. NiCad is heavier, suffers from memory effect if not fully discharged before recharging, and contains toxic cadmium. The only advantage NiCad retains is better performance in extreme cold (below -20°C).

Clutch Settings
The clutch is what makes a screwdriver different from a drill. When the set torque is reached, the clutch disengages the motor so the screw stops turning. Most cordless screwdrivers offer 5 to 21 clutch settings. Lower settings are for small screws in soft materials; higher settings are for larger screws in hardwood or metal. Always start low and increase - over-driving strips screw heads and splits wood.

If you only own one tool, a 12V drill/driver is more versatile. But if you already have a drill, a compact 3.6–4V cordless screwdriver is far handier for everyday tasks - lighter, faster to grab, and easier to use one-handed.
