Thread Identification Chart

Three measurements identify any thread: outside diameter with a caliper, pitch or threads per inch with a thread gauge, and whether it is parallel or tapered. Angle separates the rest, since UN and metric threads use 60 degrees, BSP uses 55 and JIC flares at 37.

How to identify a thread

Measure the outside diameter of a male thread at its largest point, or the inside diameter of a female port at the opening. Round to the nearest sensible figure and hold it.

Then get the pitch. On inch threads count the crests over one inch; on metric measure the distance from one crest to the next. A thread pitch gauge does both in seconds and removes the guesswork.

Check for taper by laying a straight edge along the thread, or by eye across the crests. A tapered thread narrows visibly over its length.

Diameter plus pitch plus taper narrows it to one or two candidates. If two remain, the thread angle decides, and that needs a gauge or a good profile comparison.

The pairs that catch people out

BSP and NPT at 1/2 and 3/4 inch share 14 threads per inch and near-identical diameters. Only the 55 against 60 degree angle separates them, and they will start together before binding.

JIC and ORFS look similar at a glance but seal completely differently: JIC on a 37 degree cone, ORFS on an O-ring in a flat face. They do not interchange.

JIC and SAE 45 degree flare share thread sizes at some dash numbers but differ in cone angle. A 37 degree cone in a 45 degree seat contacts on a line and weeps.

Metric fine and UNF overlap closely at some sizes. M12 x 1.25 and 1/2-20 UNF are close enough that a bolt will start and then gall solid a few turns in.

Thread Identification Chart questions

How do I identify an unknown thread?
Measure the outside diameter with a caliper, get the pitch or threads per inch with a thread gauge, and check whether it is parallel or tapered. Those three narrow it to one or two candidates, and the thread angle settles it.
How do I tell metric from imperial threads?
By pitch. Metric threads are quoted as the distance between crests in millimetres, imperial as threads per inch. A pitch gauge tells you instantly. Diameter alone is not enough, since several sizes are close.
What is the difference between UNC and UNF?
Thread count at the same diameter. A 1/2 inch bolt is 13 TPI in UNC coarse and 20 TPI in UNF fine. Fine threads hold better against vibration and give more clamp load for the same torque; coarse threads assemble faster and tolerate damage better.
Which threads look alike but do not fit?
BSP and NPT at 1/2 and 3/4 inch, which share 14 TPI but differ in angle. JIC against ORFS and against SAE 45 degree flare. And metric fine against UNF, where M12 x 1.25 will start into a 1/2-20 and gall solid.
Do I need a thread pitch gauge?
It is the single most useful tool for this. Counting crests by eye over an inch is error-prone at fine pitches, and the difference between 18 and 19 TPI is exactly what separates NPT from BSP at some sizes.
