Roller Chain Size Chart

ANSI chain numbers encode the pitch. Divide the first digits by 8 to get pitch in inches: a #40 chain has a 4/8 inch, or 1/2 inch, pitch. A trailing 0 means a standard roller, 1 means lightweight and 5 means a rollerless bush chain.

ANSI roller chain sizes

Pitch is the distance from one pin centre to the next, and it is the number that has to match the sprocket. Roller diameter and inner width matter for whether the chain sits in the sprocket teeth correctly.

Tensile strength is the breaking load of a single strand, not the working load. Design to roughly one sixth to one eighth of it for continuous duty.

How chain numbering works

Strip the last digit off the chain number and divide what is left by 8. That is the pitch in inches. #40 becomes 4/8, so half an inch. #100 becomes 10/8, so 1 1/4 inches.

The last digit is the variant: 0 is the standard series, 1 is the lightweight series (which is why #41 is narrower and weaker than #40 despite sharing a pitch), and 5 is rollerless bush chain used on slow conveyor work.

An H suffix means heavy series with thicker side plates, and a suffix of 2 or 3 after a dash means double or triple strand.

ISO metric chain equivalents

British and European chain uses ISO 606 B-series numbers. The pitches match the ANSI sizes closely but the roller diameters and plate thicknesses differ, so a B-series chain will run on an ANSI sprocket only badly and will wear both out.

Roller Chain Size Chart questions

What pitch is #40 chain?
Half an inch. Drop the trailing zero and divide by eight: 4/8 is 1/2. The same rule gives 5/8 for #50 and 3/4 for #60.
What is the difference between #40 and #41 chain?
Same 1/2 inch pitch, different construction. #41 is the lightweight series with narrower plates and a smaller roller, rated at about 2,000 lb against 3,700 lb for #40. They are not interchangeable on the same sprocket.
Can I mix ANSI and ISO chain?
Not in practice. The pitches line up but roller diameters and plate thicknesses differ, so an 08B chain on a #40 sprocket runs rough and wears both parts quickly. Match the chain to the sprocket standard.
How much load can roller chain take?
Design to about one sixth to one eighth of the average tensile figure for continuous duty. The tensile number is a breaking load measured on a new single strand, not a rating you can work to.
How do I measure chain for wear?
Measure across a known number of pitches under light tension and compare with the nominal. Replace when elongation reaches about 3 percent on industrial drives, or 1.5 percent where the sprockets are large and expensive.
