Hydraulic Hose Size Chart

Hydraulic hose is sized by dash number, and the dash number is the inside diameter in sixteenths of an inch. A -08 hose is 8/16, so 1/2 inch ID. Pick the size by flow, not by the fitting you happen to have: keep pressure lines at 15 to 20 ft/s, return lines at 10 to 15 ft/s and suction lines at 2 to 4 ft/s.

Hydraulic hose sizes by dash number

The dash number is the hose inside diameter in sixteenths of an inch. Divide by 16 and you have the ID. It is stamped on the layline along with the SAE spec and the working pressure.

The flow columns show what each size carries at the recommended velocity for that job. Undersize a pressure line and you generate heat and pressure drop; undersize a suction line and you cavitate the pump.

Hydraulic hose sizing by flow rate

Enter your flow and the line type and this returns the smallest dash size that keeps velocity inside the recommended band. If the answer sits between two sizes, go up.

Runs at 16.3 ft/s, inside the pressure line at 20 ft/s limit. Go one size up if the run is long or has many bends.

Hydraulic fitting size chart

Fitting dash sizes follow the same sixteenths rule, but the thread on the end of the fitting is a separate number and does not match the hose dash. A -08 JIC fitting has a 3/4-16 thread, not a 1/2 inch one.

Metric hydraulic fittings

Metric hydraulic fittings are specified by thread size and pitch, and by whether the cone is 24 degrees (DIN 2353, light or heavy series) or 60 degrees (BSP). The two are not interchangeable and a 24 degree cone in a 60 degree seat will leak under pressure.

DIN light series (L) suits pressures to around 315 bar depending on size, heavy series (S) goes higher. The tube OD, not the hose ID, sets the fitting size on DIN tube ends.

Hydraulic Hose Size Chart questions

What does the dash number on a hydraulic hose mean?
It is the inside diameter in sixteenths of an inch. A -06 hose is 6/16, which is 3/8 inch ID. A -16 hose is 16/16, so 1 inch. The number is stamped on the layline next to the SAE spec and working pressure.
How do I measure a hydraulic hose size?
Read the layline first, since it carries the size, spec and pressure rating. If the print has worn off, cut a clean end and measure the inside diameter of the tube, not the outer cover. Cover thickness varies between R1, R2 and R16 hose at the same ID.
Can I use a larger hose than the chart says?
Yes on suction and return lines, where the only cost is routing and price. On pressure lines an oversized hose is also safe but wastes money and makes bends harder. Going smaller is the problem: velocity rises, the fluid heats and you lose pressure at the actuator.
Do hose and fitting dash sizes always match?
The dash size does, the thread does not. A -08 hose takes a -08 fitting, but that -08 JIC fitting has a 3/4-16 thread. Never pick a fitting by measuring the thread and assuming it maps to the hose ID.
What velocity should hydraulic hose run at?
Common practice is 15 to 20 ft/s for pressure lines, 10 to 15 ft/s for return lines and 2 to 4 ft/s for pump suction. Suction is the strict one, because too high a velocity there causes cavitation and kills the pump.
