Choosing the Right Belt Dimensions for Your Sander

Selecting the correct belt size is the first critical step. The belt's dimensions, specified as width by length (e.g., 100 x 915mm), must precisely match your belt sander's requirements. An incorrectly sized belt will not track properly, leading to poor performance and potential damage to the tool or workpiece.

Check your sander's technical manual or measure a worn belt to confirm the required size. Our range includes narrow belts like 10x330mm for detail work on file sanders, common portable sizes like 75x533mm (3x21 inch), and wider belts for bench sanders.

How to Select the Correct Abrasive Grit for the Application

The grit number indicates the coarseness of the abrasive. A lower number signifies a coarser grit for aggressive material removal, while a higher number denotes a finer grit for smoothing and polishing. Using the right grit sequence is key to an efficient workflow.

Start with a coarse grit (P40-P80) for tasks like removing old finishes, leveling rough surfaces, or shaping wood and metal. An 80 grit sanding belt is a common starting point for general-purpose sanding. Progress to a medium grit (P100-P150), such as a 120 grit sanding belt, to remove the scratches left by the coarse belt. For a smooth pre-finish surface, use fine grits (P180-P400 and higher). Silicon Carbide is a harder and sharper abrasive than aluminum oxide. It excels at cutting hard materials like stainless steel, stone, and ceramics, and it is also the preferred choice for finishing non-ferrous metals like aluminum and copper. Many silicon carbide belts are built on a waterproof backing, making them suitable for wet sanding applications to achieve a finer finish and reduce dust.
