Selecting Pad Material: Foam, Wool, or Felt

The pad material directly controls the aggressiveness and finishing quality of your work. Your choice depends on the task, from heavy correction to final waxing.

Foam and sponge pads are the standard for most automotive polishing and waxing. They are available in different densities, where firmer foam provides more 'cut' for removing imperfections, and softer foam is used for finishing and applying sealants. Hex-logic foam patterns can help distribute polish evenly and reduce heat.

Wool pads, including wool felt, are more aggressive than foam. They excel at heavy cutting, removing deep scratches, and quickly correcting oxidized paint. They are also a primary choice for polishing hard materials like metal and wood when paired with an angle grinder or polisher. Felt pads are very dense and are typically used with rotary tools for fine polishing on jewelry and metal.

Matching Pad Size and Tool Compatibility

To ensure safety and performance, the buffing pad's diameter must match your tool's backing plate. Using an incorrectly sized pad can lead to poor results, tool instability, and damage to the pad or workpiece.

Our range covers all common tool types. Small 25 mm (1-inch) pads are for Dremel-style rotary tools used in jewelry or detail work. Pads from 75 mm to 150 mm (3 to 6 inches) fit most standard DA/RO car polishers and angle grinders. Always confirm the diameter of your machine's backing plate before ordering.

Check the pad's specified compatibility. A pad designed for a dual-action (DA) polisher may not withstand the high speeds of a rotary tool or angle grinder. The product listing will specify if a pad is intended for a car polisher, grinder, or rotary tool.

How to Wash and Clean Polishing Pads

Proper maintenance extends the life of your pads and prevents cross-contamination between polishing compounds. Cleaning methods differ between foam and wool materials.

Foam pads can be cleaned by hand with a dedicated pad cleaner or mild detergent in warm water. Gently agitate the surface, then rinse thoroughly and squeeze out excess water before air drying. Avoid twisting or wringing the pad, which can tear the foam.

For wool pads, it is best to clean them during use with a pad spur or stiff brush to fluff the fibers and remove dried compound. For a deep clean, use a cleaner formulated for wool and rinse with low-pressure water. Allow wool pads to air dry completely, as high heat from a machine dryer can cause the backing to separate.
