How to Identify Which Phillips Size You Need

The correct Phillips driver should seat fully into the screw head with zero wobble. The cross-shaped tip should fill the entire recess. If the tip sits loosely or only engages the bottom of the recess, the driver is too small. If it will not seat fully, it is too large. A quick field method:

  • If the screw head is smaller than a pencil eraser - try PH0 or PH00
  • If the screw head is about the size of a pencil eraser - try PH1
  • If the screw head is the size of a dime or larger - try PH2

PH000 - Micro Precision

PH000 is the smallest standard Phillips size. It is used in watches, hearing aids, and extremely small electronics. You will rarely need it outside of specialized repair work. PH000 drivers are almost always found in precision screwdriver sets rather than sold individually.

PH00 - Electronics Standard

PH00 is the workhorse of electronics repair. It fits the small Phillips screws found in smartphones, laptops, tablets, eyeglasses, and small toys. If you repair phones or computers, PH00 is one of your most-used sizes. Many people mistakenly use PH0 where PH00 is needed, resulting in stripped screws.

PH0 - Small Devices

PH0 bridges the gap between precision electronics and light household work. It fits screws on game controllers, RC vehicles, small instruments, and some appliance panels. PH0 is commonly included in both precision sets and standard screwdriver sets.

PH1 - Light Household

PH2 - The Universal Size

PH2 is the most used Phillips size in the world. It fits #8 and #10 gauge screws, which account for the vast majority of construction, drywall, and general-purpose fastening. PH3 & PH4 - Heavy Duty

Phillips vs JIS: A Common Confusion

Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) cross-head screws look almost identical to Phillips but have subtle geometry differences. JIS screws are common on Japanese motorcycles, cameras, and electronics. Using a Phillips driver on a JIS screw often causes cam-out and stripping. JIS drivers have a slightly different tip angle and do not cam out. If you work on Japanese products, consider a dedicated JIS driver set.
