A flexible screwdriver uses a bendable shaft to route around obstacles and reach fasteners that are not accessible in a straight line. The flex shaft bends up to 90 degrees or more, letting you drive screws behind pipes, inside enclosures, around corners, and in other spots where a rigid driver simply cannot reach.
How the Flex Shaft Works
The flexible shaft consists of multiple layers of tightly wound spring steel wire wrapped around a central core. The layered construction allows the shaft to bend while still transmitting rotational force from the handle to the bit. Most flex shafts range from 150 to 300 mm in usable length. Longer shafts reach deeper but transmit less torque due to increased friction and deflection.

- Standalone flex screwdriver - a complete hand tool with a handle, flex shaft, and 1/4" hex bit holder at the tip. Turn the handle and the bit turns.
- Flex shaft extension for power tools - a flexible extension that attaches to a drill or power screwdriver chuck on one end and holds a bit on the other. This is the most powerful option since the drill provides the torque.
- Right-angle flex adapter - a short flex section combined with a 90-degree bend. Splits the difference between a full flex shaft and a rigid right-angle adapter.

Limitations
Flex shafts are not high-torque tools. The flexible construction inherently absorbs some rotational energy - expect 30-50% torque loss compared to a rigid driver, depending on the bend angle. They also wear out: the spring steel layers eventually fatigue with repeated bending. For high-torque applications, a right-angle adapter on a power tool is a better choice. Flex shafts are best for light-to-medium duty fastening where access is the primary challenge.
Flex shaft extensions for drills are inexpensive (under $15) and far more versatile than a standalone flex screwdriver. Keep one in your drill bag for those unexpected tight-access situations.
