Selecting Base Membrane Polymers: PE and PVC

Industrial covers face abrasive handling and variable site weather. The base polymer determines tensile strength, flexibility in cold temperatures, and overall service life on active jobsites.

Polyethylene, or PE, provides lightweight water resistance and straightforward handling across temporary storage piles. High-density polyethylene, or HDPE, delivers higher rip resistance for high-wind scaffolding wraps. For long-term containment, heavy duty tarpaulin options made from PVC offer dense puncture resistance and withstand exposure to grease. We also supply clear pvc tarpaulin cloths with reinforcement where visual monitoring of materials is required.

Evaluating Waterproof Ratings and Surface Coatings

Water penetration damages raw building supplies and sensitive electrical rough-ins. When choosing a waterproof tarpaulin, check the outside and bottom waterproof index specifications to match job exposure.

Water resistance ratings indicate the hydrostatic head pressure the sheet withstands before moisture passes through the weave. Light exterior sun barriers typically feature an index of 1000-1500 mm. Heavy-duty construction covers provide an index of 2000-3000 mm or >3000 mm, resisting wind-driven rain and standing water on flat planes. Coatings further block seepage and prevent fibers from absorbing site runoff.

• Not Coated: Breathable coverage where natural air movement is required.
• PU Coated: Flexible water barrier for variable temperature conditions.
• PVC Coated: Heavy barrier yielding ratings like >3000 mm for severe weather protection.

Specifying Thickness and Weight Thresholds

Fabric weight and membrane gauge dictate how well site equipment withstands friction against rough scaffolding and concrete edges.

Heavier grades around 450GSM resist fluttering fatigue and mechanical tears during storms. For membrane thickness, PVC tarpaulin options ranging from 0.3~0.55mm maintain dimensional stability under tension. Choose thicker gauges whenever sheets rest directly against sharp corners or secure outdoor storage zones through winter weather.
