Straps vs. Nets: Selecting the Right Securement Type

Your first decision is whether to use straps or a net. The choice depends on the load's characteristics. Ratchet tie down straps are the standard for securing heavy, large, or uniform items like vehicles, machinery, or palletized freight. They allow you to apply significant, direct tension to hold an object firmly in place against a trailer bed or flat rack.

Cargo nets are designed to contain and restrain loose, lightweight, or irregularly shaped items. An elastic mesh net is ideal for securing luggage or tools in a truck bed, while a heavy-duty webbing net can cover and hold down bulk materials in a trailer. Nets conform to the shape of the load and are best for containment rather than high-tension lashing.

How to Select the Right Ratchet Tie Down Capacity

Matching the strap to the load weight is for safety. Every strap has a load capacity, often specified as a Maximum Weight Recommendation or Breaking Strength. The most important figure for professional use is the Working Load Limit (WLL), which is typically one-third of the breaking strength. The combined WLL of all straps used must exceed the total weight of the cargo.

Strap dimensions also indicate their application. Wider webbing, such as 40mm or 100mm, is used for heavy-duty cargo lashing and offers higher strength and durability. Strap length should be sufficient to go over the load and attach to anchor points on both sides with enough slack to operate the ratchet. Material and End Fitting Considerations

The material of the strap determines its performance. Polyester is the most common material for tie down straps because it has low stretch, which prevents loads from loosening during transit. It also offers good resistance to UV light and water. The metal components, like the ratchet and hooks, are typically made from carbon steel for strength and durability.

End fittings must be compatible with your vehicle's anchor points. S-hooks are a common choice for attaching to rings and tie-down loops on pickups and utility trailers. For heavier applications, double J-hooks provide a more secure connection to D-rings and the side rails of flatbeds. Always verify that the hook is fully engaged with the anchor point before applying tension.
