How to Choose an Electric Fence Energizer

The energizer, or controller, is the heart of your fence system. Its power is measured in joules (J), which indicates the energy of the electrical pulse. The required joule rating depends on the total length of your fence, the type of animal being contained, and the expected vegetation load. For example, a 1.5J unit is typically sufficient for a 10km fence line with light vegetation, suitable for cattle or sheep.

Consider your power source. AC-powered units are reliable for fences near barns or mains access. For remote pastures, select a 12V DC energizer. These models offer flexibility, running on a 12V battery that can be charged via a main charger or a connected solar panel. Look for features like LCD voltage displays and integrated alarms, which help you monitor fence condition and quickly identify faults.

Selecting Wire, Rope, and Fence Insulators

The conductor carries the pulse along the fence line. We supply multi-strand stainless steel wire and poly-rope, which offer good conductivity and resistance to corrosion. A common choice is red and white rope, which provides high visibility for livestock.

Electric fence insulators prevent the electrical pulse from shorting to the ground through the fence posts. The type you need depends on your post material and conductor. For wooden or timber posts, screw-in ring insulators are a standard and effective solution. They are designed to hold steel wire, poly-wire, or tape securely while maintaining a safe distance from the post. Always match the insulator to your specific post and wire type for a reliable fence.
