Laptop Screwdriver: Which Drivers You Need for Every Brand

Compel Team

Upgrading RAM, swapping an SSD, or cleaning a fan - all of these start with getting the back panel off. The problem: every laptop brand uses different screws, and the wrong screwdriver strips them instantly. Here is exactly what you need.

Common Laptop Screw Types

Most laptops use some combination of Phillips, Torx, and Pentalobe fasteners. The screws are small - typically M2 or M2.5 machine screws - so standard-size drivers are too large. You need precision drivers.

  • Phillips PH0 and PH00 - the most common across Windows laptops
  • Torx T5 and T6 - used on many Ultrabooks and business laptops
  • Pentalobe P5 (TS4) - Apple MacBook bottom case screws since 2009
  • Hex 2.0 mm - occasionally used on Lenovo ThinkPad models

SSD and RAM Upgrades

Once the back panel is off, most M.2 SSD mounting screws are Phillips PH0 or PH00. RAM modules are held by spring clips - no screwdriver needed. The SSD standoff screw is the one people strip most often because they use a PH1 when a PH0 is correct.

ESD Precautions

Static electricity kills laptop components. Before opening any laptop:

  1. Power off and unplug the laptop completely
  2. Wear an anti-static wrist strap grounded to a metal surface
  3. Work on a non-conductive surface - not carpet
  4. Touch a grounded metal object before handling components
  5. Disconnect the battery ribbon cable before touching any internals
Pro Tip

Keep a magnetic parts tray or a strip of tape nearby. Laptop screws are tiny - if one rolls off the table, you may never find it.

What to Look for in a Laptop Screwdriver Set

A good laptop screwdriver set should include at least Phillips PH000, PH00, and PH0, Torx T4, T5, and T6, Pentalobe P2 and P5, and a plastic spudger for prying clips. Magnetised tips are essential - you cannot hold M2 screws with your fingers in tight laptop chassis. Swivel-top handles let you apply downward pressure while turning with fingertip precision.
